How to Prepare for this Procedure
- Consultation: Fix an appointment with the Doctor. Confirm before coming to the hospital with the receptionist.
- Fasting: The Doctor will inform about the hours of fasting required before the procedure.
- Medications: Inform your Doctor about all the medications you are taking including OTC medications. They will advise you whether to continue or adjust the regime.
- Health conditions: Inform your past and present medical history and drug allergies.
- Loose clothing: You will be required to change to hospital gowns.
- Jewellery and Accessories: Remove before the procedure.
- Communicate: Inform the Doctor if you feel uneasy during, before or after procedure.
- General Advice: Ask queries and clear doubts, if any.
- Preparation: Part preparation and sedation.
- Insertion of Endoscope: A thin flexible tube with a light and camera at the tip, called an endoscope, is inserted.
- Visual Inspection: The Doctor will observe the images displayed on a monitor real time, they will observe the lining of the oesophagus and stomach and some parts of the small intestine.
- Biopsy: If required, the Doctor will take a tissue sample (biopsy) for further analysis, removing polyps or growths or bleeding lesions.
You will need someone along with you to drive you home as the sedative used can affect your ability to drive.
- Recovery Area: You will be monitored until the effects of the sedations wears off.
- General Advice: Rest and Observation.
- Post Procedure: Dietary restrictions, medications guidelines will be provided. Follow ups will be informed.
- Diet: You will be advised on a liquid diet, then gradually transition from semi-solid foods to solid foods.
- Activity: Generally advised to avoid strenuous activity for up to 24 hours post-procedure.
- Discomfort: Bloating and mild discomfort normal after procedure.
- Recovery time: Depends and varies from 24 to 48 hours.
- Hydration: Adequate hydration required post procedure.
